What is the Daniel Fast?
The Daniel Fast is a biblically based partial fast. It is a method of fasting that men and women all over the world are using as they enter the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting. Â
Â
There are two anchor scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1Â the Prophet ate only vegetables that would have included fruits and drank only water. From this scripture, we get two of the guidelines for the fast. Then in Daniel 10 we read that the Prophet ate no meat, nor any choice breads/foods and he drank no wine for 21 days. So, from this scripture, we get the three guidelines: fruits, vegetables, water, no sweeteners and no breads and the limiting of certain things. The spiritual goal of the fast is to bring you into a more engaged relationship with the Lord.
The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul, and Spirit
The Bible teaches us that we are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body. The Daniel Fast affects all three parts of us as we enter a period of focused prayer and fasting.
The Body: Certainly, our bodies are affected as our diet changes, for some in very dramatic ways, during the Daniel Fast. Many men and women experience detoxing from caffeine, chemicals, and sugar. Most people lose weight during the Daniel Fast.
The Soul: Frequently referred to as "the flesh" in the Bible, the soul is also greatly impacted during the Daniel Fast. The soul is the seat of our emotions, intellect, personality, and will. It is in the "soulish realm" where we experience cravings, frustration, anger, and even happiness. During the Daniel Fast, your soul may very well rebel against the dramatic change in your diet. Experiencing and winning this battle over the flesh is often one of the most powerful lessons of the Daniel Fast.
The Spirit: Our spirit is that born-again part of us that surrenders to God and then abides with the Father and the Son. Our spirit is filled with the Holy Spirit when we yield to Him. During the Daniel Fast, we want to put our spirit in charge of the other two parts of us. When our flesh is acting out with a craving, we take control of it with our spirit.
Fasting is always coupled with a spiritual goal. So, during this time of fasting, you will want to focus on prayer, scriptures, and meditation.
What is Fasting?
The scripture Joel 2:15 says, "Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly." Fasting is disciplining your flesh, mind, and spirit by abstaining from normal pleasures for a selected period, while focusing on a deeper spiritual relationship with God.
The Spiritual Benefits of Fasting, Praying & Scriptures
God reveals things to come, promotes unity and harmony for the body of Christ. Fasting, prayer, and scripture go together. Fasting prepares the body and mind, and prayer enters you into the presence of the Lord. Prayer and fasting promote spiritual power and release the anointing. Both prayer and fasting are strengthened by reading scriptures. The three are essential to move the individual to spiritual maturity and a closer relationship with the Lord.
As a Church, We Are Praying For:
The presence of God and the favor of God as we enter the year of Answered Prayers.
Evangelism and witnessing to grow the church that souls be added to the kingdom.
What am I praying for?
To see the hand and favor of God for the individual, family, and church.
Manifestation of physical healing and spiritual miracles.
Praying for the Spirit of the Lord to intervene in our families.
To experience the pulling down of physical and spiritual strongholds.
Strengthening of families, marriages, and church fellowship.
Greater witness capability to reach the lost and evangelize the unsaved.
Restoration and reconciliation of broken relationships.
