Founded in 1974, First Genesis has been a cornerstone of Rochester, NY, providing a welcoming space for all to deepen their relationship with God. With a variety of ministries and programs for people of all ages, we strive to nurture the spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being of our congregation and community. Our mission at First Genesis Baptist Church is to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ by fostering a strong sense of faith, community, and service. We aim to provide spiritual guidance and support to individuals and families, helping them grow in their relationship with God. Through worship, education, and outreach, we are dedicated to transforming lives and spreading the love of Christ in our congregation and the Rochester community.

By expanding our ministries, embracing modern technology, and deepening our outreach efforts, we aim to create a lasting impact on future generations.
Our History
First Genesis Baptist Church was founded on June 5, 1974, around the kitchen table of Rev. Clarence and Mrs. Maryann Gavin. Inspired by a shared vision of faith and service, twelve dedicated members gathered to form a church that would impact lives for generations to come. In 1975, the church moved to 57 Bartlett Street, and later to its current home at 292 Hudson Avenue. Over the years, First Genesis has grown in numbers and influence, establishing vital ministries like the Usher Board, Choirs, Sunday School, and Deacon and Deaconess Boards. Rooted in our motto, “To Serve This Present Age,” we have remained committed to spiritual growth and community service for the past five decades.

Bishop Fredrick Johnson Sr.
Pastor
Rev. Dr. Fredrick Johnson Sr. is the senior pastor of First Genesis Baptist Church, where he leads with a vision of “Making Disciples for the Kingdom.” With over 29 years in ministry, he has guided the church through growth, community development, and a $45 million housing project, while also serving as a professor and mentor to pastors and leaders.

First Lady
First Lady Gail Johnson, wife of Rev. Dr. Fredrick Johnson, is an educator in the Rochester City School District, dedicated to helping children reach their potential. A Brooklyn native, she holds degrees in science, education, and school administration and actively supports the ministries at First Genesis Baptist Church.
